Sorry to sound macabre, but you could die if you don’t fill and adhere to your healthcare practitioner’s prescription for Xarelto (ravaroxaban). It is an anticoagulant, a medication that lowers the rate of blood clots and thereby lowers the risk of stroke. Especially if you were diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation, a condition characterized by problems associated with irregular heart rate or rhythm, it’s likely that you were prescribed an anticoagulant, such as Xarelto, Pradaxa, or Warfarin. I’m talking about Xarelto because it’s a relatively new brand name drug, which is not available as a generic, and some people who need it might not be able to afford it. It is not necessarily the best anticoagulant out there for you. Alternative medications are available and in use.
If you don’t have insurance or your insurance does not cover Xarelto, then you could face the out-of-pocket costs, which are about $1,176 for a three-month supply of the 20mg pill. If you can afford that then consider yourself lucky. For those who cannot, you could try a Xarelto patient assistance program. Alternatively, ask your doctor or other healthcare provider, and do your own research about another anti-coagulant, such as Pradaxa and Warfarin, that could work for you.
If you do not qualify for a patient assistance program, and your healthcare provider insists on Xarelto, there are verified international online pharmacies that sell brand name Xarelto at a very low price. In fact, the lowest cost international option runs you $2.08/pill, which is $187.20 for 90 tablets. That’s a savings of 84% or almost $1,000 over three months, $4,000 over the course of a year, versus the cash price at some U.S. pharmacies.
For those interested in where your medications come from: the Xarelto 20mg you buy in the U.S. is manufactured in Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. label. Our research shows that the lowest cost international option for Xarelto was manufactured in Germany by Bayer Pharma AG.
I started this post noting the mortality risks of not taking prescribed medications. I’d like to now return to this public health issue not in order to inflame or dramatize but to remind consumers and health officials about the public crisis of high drug prices. Strokes often cause death. Not taking your prescribed anticoagulant can increase your chance of having a stroke. Thirty-five million Americans don’t fill a prescription each year due to high prices; if Xarelto was one of these medicines, then its high price may have prevented people from obtaining it. Some of those people, unfortunately, may have had strokes and passed away. The point here is to not ignore your healthcare provider’s prescription and advice. Follow-up quickly and fill your prescription. If you can’t afford it, then pursue all available options.

Angela,
As mentioned in the blog post, Xarelto can be obtained at online pharmacies verified by PharmacyChecker.com for significantly less than you might pay at a local pharmacy–in some cases the savings can be more than 70%.
To compare Xarelto prices, please see this page: http://www.pharmacychecker.com/brand/xarelto-prices
Please be kind enough and directing me to a site or international company that is or are producing or distributing 100% exact chemical base compound drug. I just was told that I have a serious problem with my blood and have several blood flood in my legs. Due to this serious and possible life ending condition it is now necessary that I take everyday day of my life xarelto 20 mg. in order to thin out my blood and minimize the exposure of harm yo my body. Please help me, I only live on my social security check for each month when it comes to make it to the next month. Without this expensive medicine the chance of surviving I was told becomes goes up significantly.
I just do not understand why these companies cannot take in consideration of life conditions when they are pricing their products. It is sad when a person life depends on the the mighty dollar. They should tell that to my grand children, if I pass sooner then later.
Thank you very much for any and all of your assistance concerning this matter.
Hi Perry –
I’m sorry your struggling with this health issue and that it’s compounded by the price of Xarelto.
There is a patient assistance program that you might consider: http://www.janssenprescriptionassistance.com/xarelto-cost-assistance.
Xarelto is available at a lower cost outside the U.S. Here are some international online pharmacies in our program that sell the medication: https://www.pharmacychecker.com/brand/price-comparison/xarelto/20+mg/.”
The medication is not available as a generic so ask the pharmacy for the brand product manufactured by the same company as in the US, which is Jansen or Bayer as shown here: https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/static/10db92f9-2300-4a80-836b-673e1ae91610/current/xarelto-12.jpg. I believe that Jansen makes the same Xarelto product for different country markets.
I have been prescribed Xarelto 15mg by a British GP but I now live in Alicante Spain and need to buy them how can I still afford this life saving drug at a reasonable price ? Can you please advise
Hi Martin – Why can’t you obtain the medication in Spain? If it’s not available or affordable, then you could buy it from an international online pharmacy. Compare prices here: https://www.pharmacychecker.com/brand/price-comparison/xarelto/15+mg/.
Henry, why are the prices so different? E.g., for 20mg Xarelto, the price per pill varies from around $1.8 to $6.9. What is difference on the quality? Are the pills of the lower price also reliable?
Drug prices differ on our site because they do so internationally from country to country. A good example of this is our latest drug price report: https://www.pharmacychecker.com/news/pharmacychecker-finds-brand-name-drugs-70-percent-lower-canada-97-other-countries.asp.
As we wrote in the post and in response to your question about quality: “For those interested in where your medications come from: the Xarelto 20mg you buy in the U.S. is manufactured in Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. label. Our research shows that the lowest cost international option for Xarelto was manufactured in Germany by Bayer Pharma AG.”
I am in the doughnut hole and can’t afford it.
